WHAT IS CSCS?
The Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) was set up by the construction industry to improve quality and reduce accidents. The scheme is administered by the construction industry body Construction Skills and ensures that everyone working in construction has a minimum level of health and safety awareness.
DO I NEED CSCS?
You will increase your chances of finding employment in construction with a valid CSCS card. Not all construction companies operate within the CSCS scheme, however demand is ever increasing for operatives with CSCS qualifications. This applies to managers, trades people and operatives.
HOW DO I GET CSCS QUALIFIED?
In most cases, you will need to pass the CSCS Health & Safety test first and then apply for the card. The cards cover hundreds of occupations so whatever you do in construction there will be a card for you. For skilled or professional cards you will need proof of competence such as an SVQ, NVQ or equivalent. Cards typically take 15 to 20 days to arrive.
CSCS HEALTH & SAFETY TEST
The type of card being applied for will determine the level of test that needs to be taken. The test is computer based, multiple-choice and is a maximum of 45 minutes. Test results are available immediately and a paper certificate is issued for a pass result.
The questions and answers can be studied in the Health & Safety Test Revision Book 2012 Edition which is available from most high street and online booksellers.
