What should you expect taking the CSCS test?

If you want to be seen as competent and qualified for your job role then you will want to do a simple task such as taking the cscs test and owning the very sought after cscs card. “But what is involved in taking the cscs test?” I hear you ask, is the test just like any other test you might take, is there anything special I have to do first before I can take a cscs test?

In another post a gave you the information about the Construction Skills Certification Scheme and told you about the many goals, also the purposes of the cscs training, if you would like to have the full benefits of the cscs training you must first prove that you have a knowledge of safe working practices in your chosen field, this is where the cscs test come in.

What we will do now is try and give you a brief explanation of what you should expect when taking the cscs test and how you can make sure you pass it first time with flying colours.

The first bit of good news is that the test is set in a multiple choice format which is done on a touch screen computer, that mean you if you do not know the answer you should be able narrow the answer down to just a few answers. All the question inside the test will be directly related to the type of cscs card that you are applying for. But please do know that some basic questions about PPE will be guaranteed to show up in the exam. You will have 45 minutes to finish the exam but if you feel you have finished and had time to recheck all your answers you of course are allowed to leave whenever you like.

In the exam you should expect to have some “what if?” scenario questions where common sense will help you answer the questions, you will need to put yourself in a what if emergency situation where you will need to made critical safety decisions. These types of questions are especially related for supervisors. Even though there will be some common sense questions you should not expect the cscs card test to be a complete pushover, many people have still failed it before if they are not prepared enough, you will still be required to hit the pass mark or 47 out of 50 to pass and get your card.

What should I bring?

When you decide to take your cscs test make sure you bring some passport photos to the test centre, these will be for your cscs card for when you pass, your booking ref number or the booking letter and not forgetting the most important so you can sit the test, some form of photo ID such as your driving license or passport.
